I made a mistake on the identification of this photo when this post was first published. I called it a Western Pygmy-Blue, Brephidium exilis which was incorrect. The correct identification of this butterfly is the Ceraunus Blue, Hemiargus ceraunus (linked to my gallery where I have others). And you can see others’ photos from throughout Central America and the southern half of the United States on butterfliesandmoths.
¡Pura Vida!
This tiny little butterfly was new to me in a September 2022 sighting at Hotel Banana Azul in Caribbean Costa Rica, which I saw again there and in my garden in 2023, Ceraunus Blue, Hemiargus ceraunus! I liked it so much I chose one of my garden shots for the cover of my newest butterfly book, Pura Vida Butterflies, Second Edition released last month.
Of course I also have a Ceraunus Blue GALLERY with shots from all four sightings. Now here’s what I saw the other day in my garden, with two shots, even though not as good as my earlier photos :-) . . .
This is my third time to photograph a Ceraunus Blue, Hemiargus ceraunus, including one other time in my home garden and one at Hotel Banana Azul in the Caribbean. This is one of those tiny, fingernail-sized butterflies and seems to be fairly common in North and Central America. Here’s my three different views of this one last Thursday in my garden . . .
