GUANACASTE

This is my least-traveled area of my categories, though if I compared it with other provinces, San Jose Province might be less-traveled (not counting the city). It is also my less favorite area or province for two or three reasons: (1) The most promoted areas are the over-developed beaches with high-priced chain hotels, (2) Much of Guanacaste is hot & dry, as the driest province in Costa Rica (least amount of rain), and (3) Most places there are simply more difficult to get to for me without a car.

My two favorite places in Guanacaste, so far, are Rincón de la Vieja National Park and Palo Verde National Park, while most tourist go to Guanacaste for the beaches and I go for nature places. Palo Verde is excellent birding, but the last time I checked, Rancho Humo was closed as a hotel, open only for day visitors. It is adjacent to the park.

Note that the southern end of the Nicoya Peninsula (Tambor Bay area) is not in Guanacaste Province but in Puntarenas Province and thus my one visit there is included in the Pacific Slope section.
