Banded Yellow

This tiny butterfly appears at first to be plain beige with dark patches showing through from the top side (they are dark brown patches). But if you look close you can see a faint yellow band along the edge of the forward wing. The only ones I’ve seen have been in my garden and on the nearby Calle Nueva dirt road. See my other shots, including one top view showing those dark brown patches and at least one with a more obvious yellow band! 🙂 All in my gallery: Banded Yellow, Limoncito de Faja, Eurema elathea.

Banded Yellow

or at least I am pretty sure that is the identification, Banded Yellow, Eurema elathea (my gallery link) and it is common to have all of these different colors (white, tan, yellow, orangey), but without a view of the top of wings (to see yellow & brown bands) it is difficult for an exact ID as there are others similar to this in the Pieridae family of butterflies. 🙂 Here’s four shots from Calle Nueva, all 4 different colors (but I think the same species) . . .

Banded Yellow

This is a new species for me and thus no gallery yet. Though this Banded Yellow, Eurema elathea is is very similar to the Barred Yellow, Eurema diaria which is in my gallery and I could have some of those mis-identified, or this one! 🙂 I still struggle with some identifications, but believe this one to be Eurema elathea, which is more common in South America, but we have lots of South American butterflies here in Costa Rica and iNaturalist Costa Rica has recorded 9 observations.
