Fence Post Fungi

Thanks to neighbor & friend Judith LaBelle for finding these fungi on a fence post across the street from my house by the cow pasture just yesterday!

I have submitted both fungi to iNaturalist where I will hopefully get an identification soon. The genus and family identifications I’m using on the photos are from the AI on iNaturalist and I’m glad the AI doesn’t force an identification but accepts a broader genus or even broader family when not certain. Google Lens just keeps going with possible IDs, though in their first paragraph on the Shelf Fungus (Bracket Fungus) did agree that is is most likely in the Hexagonia Genus as iNat says; while on what iNaturalist calls mushrooms in Family Hypoxylaceae, they got more specific with a species name that I will learn later if an expert on iNaturalist agrees: Lens called them “Afred’s Cakes” or “Cramp Balls” (2 common names) and the species name “Daldivia concentrica.” All are fungi! 🙂

Lichens, Leaves & Things . . .

. . . are a part of the often unseen beauty in nature and have become a regular category of photos for me when I trek in the forest. Here’s 2 photos plus the feature at top, but you can see several more in my Lichens, Leaves & Nature Things GALLERY from the Caribe Sur this month.

And beyond this recent trip to Hotel Banana Azul, I have a bigger gallery of collected Leaves & Nature Things pulled from many trips and my garden that just might interest you and another of Just Fungi (lichens, mushrooms, etc.). Both are from all over Costa Rica. 🙂

Since I first wrote this I have completed the entire Trip Gallery for Hotel Banana Azul, Playa Negra, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Limón Province! 🙂

And though I could continue sharing photos from Banana Azul, I think I will stop for now and come back to photo shares from my garden in Atenas, Alajuela Province, starting tomorrow. But you can see more in the above-linked Trip Gallery. ¡Pura Vida!

Liking the Lichens

Photographed under the same Higueron Tree as yesterday’s mushrooms, only a few days later and the mushrooms were gone! 🙂

Parasola plicatilis: The Pleated Inkcap Mushroom

and one website called it an “Urban Mushroom” while a third site more logically called it the “Japanese Parasol Mushroom.” 🙂 These were seen on a morning walk growing under the Higueron Tree (Strangler Fig) by the cow pasture in front of my house. This identity was found on the internet which sometimes works if I use the right words! 🙂 I started to just call them “Fluted Mushrooms” (my first impression) but learned on the internet search that that is the name of a culinary recipe! 🙂 There is also a “Fluted Bird’s Nest Mushroom” that is different and concave like a nest. Nature continues to entertain me! 🙂
