Uno Mil Tienda – Like a Dollar Store

Uno Mil Tienda – One Mil Store
I walked by this one in Alajuela today with a colorful sign.
Everything in the store costs ₡1,000, one thousand colones, $1.76 at today’s conversion rate
$1 USD = ₡568 Costa Rica Colones
Alajuela, Costa Rica

There are several of these in Alajuela and in San Jose. We have a little one, more like a booth between two stores. Everything costs an even one mil colones, tax included. A good place to get a pair of cheap sunglasses you know you will lose of break anyway!  🙂

In addition we have in Atenas two “Chinese Cheap Stores” with multiple prices of items, but pretty much the cheapest price for everything they have which includes some clothing, lots of toys and other plastic goods and lots of household items both plastic and of other material. Everything is made in China.

Front & Back of a Uno Mil billet
One Mil is our smallest paper billet. Anything smaller is coins.
This picture is out of proportion to avoid counterfeiting.

Interesting quote:
“Those who had the remaining jobs would have to buy the cheapest stuff possible with their drastically reduced wages, and in order for the manufacturers to keep that stuff cheap, it would have to be made by fifteen-year-olds in China.”
