Blue-black Grassquit

Another seed-eating bird found only in Central & South America, the Blue-black Grassquit (my gallery link) with the one above on a little bush or plant in the cow pasture across the street from me. This male was jumping straight up in the air from this bush about two feet or 60 centimeters as a courtship display, which I’m yet to catch an action shot of! 🙂 See more from there and from 6 other Costa Rica locations in my above-linked gallery. This is one of two or three different ” seed eater type” birds that I see around my house, especially in the cow pasture across the street where this one is. Blue-black Grassquit Immature Male

The adult males are a strong black & blue while the adult females are brown. It is the immature males that have the mottled brown, blue & black look like this. Including my favorite shot of females lined up on a barbwire fence at Carate adjacent Corcovado National Park back in 2009 on my first trip to Costa Rica. 🙂

Blue-black Grassquit

Looking over the meadow across from my house where he will feed, this male has a black band across his back which is the shadow of another powerline above him. 🙂 I’ve seen both male & female of these all over Costa Rica as shown in my gallery at: Blue-black Grassquit, Volatinia jacarina, including that first trip to Costa Rica while at Carate on the Osa Peninsula in 2009. Note that he is similar to the Blue-black Grosbeak I recently shared a photo of, but smaller. Both feed on the grasses (seeds).

One of the tiny “seedeater-type” birds in the cow pasture across from my house, the Blue-black Grassquit, Volatinia jacarina (my gallery link) which is one of the first birds I photographed on my first trip to Costa Rica in 2009. 🙂
