Butterflies photographed in Costa Rica and nearby
I don’t go to the cow pasture enough for birds, butterflies and a lot of other nature to photograph, so on a recent morning I walked down the road along the pasture fence to that only big tree on right side of pasture by the road and back to my gate from where the feature photo was made. In about 15 to 20 minutes I photographed 6 species of butterflies and the other nature items in a gallery below this one mimosa plant photo . . .
A new species for me! Or my first time to see and photograph, thus these 2 photos are the only ones today in my Gallery Four-spotted Sailor, but who knows, I might see another one tomorrow! 🙂 And a fun fact about this one is that I photographed him through my kitchen sink window, where I spotted him while washing dishes! 🙂 There are several kinds of “Sailor” butterflies and I’ve seen only one other, the Pale Sailor, which I’ve seen 2 different years in my garden plus nearby on 8th Avenue near Hotel Colinas del Sol, so a lot more photos!

My blog/website administrative page has a bucket for “Drafts” and occasionally I put something in there that I think I might work into a blog post later (like yesterday’s). Back in 2022 I placed the above quote from Proverbs that I picked from one of my Daily Bible Readings to comment on later and here I am, about 3 years later, commenting on it (with photos!). 🙂

This little brown skipper with a historic-sounding name was at Punta Leona Nature Resort as he sometimes is in my garden. See my gallery Pompeius Skipper – Pompeius pompeius for more photos of this “brown is beautiful” little butterfly. 🙂

My 2025 Punta Leona GALLERY is now finished!
A butterfly that I don’t see very often, though in 5 locations now, is the Dirce Beauty, Colobura dirce (my gallery link) was one of the 11 species that I photographed at Punta Leona. B&W butterflies don’t have a lot of fans, but it is one more of the many species found here!

This Pale Owl-Butterfly – Caligo telamonius (my gallery link) is one of several species in the Caligo Genus with the large eye spot on each wing so that when they spread their wings they may appear to a predator as a much larger animal (like an owl) and thus a defensive mechanism. Owl-butterflies are also one of the largest butterflies in Costa Rica. This one was spotted at Hotel Punta Leona Christmas Week. Some earlier sources called it the “Yellow-fronted Owl-Butterfly.”

One of the most seen butterflies all over Costa Rica is this Banded Peacock, Anartia fatima (my gallery link) photographed here along one of the roads/streets in Punta Leona Resort, Puntarenas, Costa Rica.

There are 5 different “Cattleheart” (Parides) butterflies that are very similar to this one but I don’t think any are an exact match, so I’m putting it in the Genus and will hope for an expert identifier on iNaturalist to give it a correct species name. Then I will change it in my gallery. These black, red and white Swallowtails (linked to my gallery where there are about a dozen species of these ). They seem to be quite common in Costa Rica and not easy for me to differentiate all of the species. 🙂
At least that is what everyone calls them in English! 🙂 While the “official” common name in English is “Common Morpho!” And in Spanish everyone is covered with “Mariposa Morfo Azul Común” or “Common Blue Morpho Butterfly!” 🙂 And “Common” is good because there are other species with blue tops! 🙂 See my photos from many different locations of this, the National Butterfly of Costa Rica, Common Morpho, Morpho helenor gallery.
