Zoo Birds?

Sure! I photograph ALL BIRDS, anywhere I find them, and many zoos are great places for birds, with some you will never get to see in the wild!

One of my many “quarantine projects” is getting my old “pre-Costa Rica” photos in my online gallery where I can see, use or reference them. One of the biggest galleries I am now working on is the gazillion photos I made at Nashville Zoo, my favorite zoo in the whole world!

And my first sub-gallery for Nashville Zoo is of course BIRDS! Today (Monday) I just finished my Nashville Zoo BIRDS gallery with 65 different species and a few of my favorite photos from Nashville days. About 6 of those are “wild” birds that just flew in for the ponds, trees, etc. Just be aware that these are older photos made between 2004 & 2014 and some birds may not still be there and of course there are new animals there I’ve never seen!   🙂

First page of Nashville Zoo Birds alphabetically. Each is a gallery with multiple photos of that bird.

That got me thinking about the birds I’ve seen and photographed at other zoos, so today (Monday) I created a new page for my big BIRDS gallery:  Links to BIRDS in ZOOS with literally hundreds of bird photos from around the world and 40 zoos! Only a few birds in each zoo, none comparing to my Nashville Zoo collection, but a lot of birds and fun to collect! Staying busy at home!   🙂

  1. Hi Charlie – I was a zookeeper for birds at San Antonio Zoo for 5+ yrs. They have a great collection, if you ever are motivated to see a new zoo? I have tons of photos from there – old style paper.

  2. Thanks Deborah! And if I ever get back to the states (doubtful) I would love to see San Antonio Zoo which I suspect is comprable to Nashville Zoo where I was a docent and volunteer photographer for about 10 years. I lived for awhile in Dallas and have visited San Antonio 2 or 3 times but never the zoo and that was before my photography hobby anyway. My joy now is experiencing wild birds here in Costa Rica. Pura vida!

    1. And oh yes, I meant to ask where in Costa Rica do you live? I am retired and living in a rental casita in the little coffee farming town of Atenas, just 15 minutes west of Zoo Ave La Garita which I assume, as a former bird zookeeper, you are acquainted with. I’ve been there many times and recently visited Toucan Ranch Heredia for the first time and on my once-a-year trips to Caribe I’ve visited and like The Ara Project for Green Macaws, plus Jaguar Rescue Center and Sloth Rescue Center, all of which have birds. There is another Ara Project for the Scarlet Macaw somewhere north of Puntarenas, but I’ve not been there yet. We live in a nature lovers paradise!

  3. I’m in Grecia. Maybe when we are free to be within spitting distance of each other again, I could bring my photos to the former Kay’s restaurant, aka Polonia, to show you. If you wish. Of course I’ve been to Zoo Ave. Might volunteer there in the future, if they decide to take volunteers US-style rather than pay-for-a-week ‘interns’. Almost went to Toucan Rescue – what did you think of it? Have a blog on it? Duh I’ll look…I saw the ARA Project in tatters before it moved from Alajuela, when the founder’s beneficiaries dismantled it. Bought a few things . Cahuita is a fun spot indeed!
