Land Crab

On my hike up the mountain to the waterfalls here at El Silencio Lodge I ran into a Land Crab or Gecarcinidae on the trail. A first for me in Costa Rica or maybe anywhere in the mountains! For those interested, see the Wikipedia Article or I found a more specific online book article The Land Crabs of Costa Rica which seems to have more about the ones closer to the ocean. This place is nowhere near an ocean!

Nature is constantly full of surprises!

And so is THIS TRIP GALLERY: 2020 El Silencio Lodge & Reserve. 🙂

¡Pura Vida!

  1. I came upon a large one in my bathroom here in Palmares which is also nowhere near the ocean. I heard scrabbling noises from behind a cardboard box and these big black claws slowly revealed themselves. Gave me a bit of a scare – had no idea such a thing existed. We had to get a big bowl to pop over him and a card to put under him. He was quite strong. We released him at the end of the garden and I don’t know where he went from there.
