An Eventful Day

8AM Spanish Class with Hilda my new “more mature” teacher who has been trying to help me understand past perfect participles in Spanish and I’m not sure I do in English! 🙂

An errand-running morning after class with about 5 stops and much accomplished.

2:30 bus to Alajuela gave me time for my late lunch or early dinner there before a 4:30 appointment with another new Jesus in my life, Dr. Roberto Jesús Gamboa Arend, Dermatologist. He looked at all my “tags” and other growths, moles, assuring me that I do not have cancer, then used the nitrogen or whatever to freeze-dry most of them. I have a cream to put on each of them until they fall off on their own, which took two pharmacies to find and I barely made the 5:30 bus back to Atenas which was standing room only. I stood less than a minute when a young man, maybe 20 I guess, got up and insisted I take his seat. This is typical of the high respect given to older people here. A good feeling.

I’m home and tired now with only 1 little errand for tomorrow. Whew! Photo is of sunset from my terrace last night.

¡Pura vida!

The Birthday that Won’t Go Away!

My friend Jason Quesada now works in Jaco and is only in Atenas on weekends. Well, he was back this weekend and showed up at my house this afternoon with a friend and a birthday cake. We had a great time visiting and I enjoyed meeting a new local friend, Christopher, who is about as far along with his English as I am with my Spanish. Language learning! Wow!

It has been a nice week. Friday I had my teeth cleaned by a local Spanish-only dentist and Monday I go to a Spanish-speaking dermatologist.  Then next Saturday I’m checking out a new exotic lodge called Xandri. Never a dull moment!   ¡Pura Vida!

Saving the Scarlet Macaws

I was happy on my visit to Tambor Tropical Beach Resort to see the many nesting boxes that hotel provides for Scarlet Macaws helping to maintain the population in that part of the Pacific Coast, the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. The destruction of large trees with cavities is possibly the biggest factor leading to the endangerment of this species as has already happened to the Green Macaw on the Caribbean Coast.

Well, here’s a Tico Times Article about More Scarlet Macaw Nesting boxes even closer to my home at Hotel Punta Leona near Jaco/Tarcoles. The article includes a video that will not let me share here (only FB). Check out the article & video and even the hotel which I will try to visit myself eventually!  🙂

Hints of Africa

I lived for 3 years in The Gambia, West Africa which is undoubtedly a “3rd World” country, so much more primitive and less developed than Costa Rica which some call a “2nd World” or developing nation, but still almost a night-day contrast with The Gambia, though occasionally something reminds me of Africa, usually in rural areas but sometimes even in the cities.

When I go to Alajuela by bus I arrive at a primitive bus station, just a big parking lot! Not in the most desirable part of town! Then my most common first stop is Aeropost to pick up an internet order package, about a 10 to 12 block long walk (I need to count it sometime!). The first 4 blocks or until past the Central Market is what sometimes reminds me of Africa. The broken sidewalks are usually crowded with many people, most poor. They are made more crowded by the occasional vendor like the fruit & vegetable guy in this photo and beggars sitting on the sidewalk asking for money. (None of this in Atenas.) And this area has only cheap merchandise shops, trash in the street, nasty smells of rotting food, milk, or even a dead animal today (probably a rat/mouse) causing me to walk fast the first four blocks to get past the mercado and my reminders of West Africa. Then there is a large department store, bank, nicer businesses, Central Park, Cathedral, restaurants, etc. Another world a block away!

And today I fell again (like I’m getting old or something!). On the way back up the street from Aeropost, just before Central Park and the McDonalds where I ate breakfast, my foot was stopped by a loose brick in the sidewalk while the rest of my body kept going! Crash into the nasty street gutter with abrasions on both hands and knees and immediately a plethora of people helping me get up, a parking lot attendant giving me his chair. I asked him for a band-aid but could not remember the spanish name (la curita) and rare that I did not have one in my billfold, but I didn’t. I just wrapped my bleeding finger in my handkerchief and walked on to McDonalds where I cleaned up in their bathroom and rested with a full breakfast before walking back to the next bus to Atenas. That was today’s adventure and I’m staying home the rest of the day! 🙂  And reminding myself to break a very old habit of walking fast! And life is still good here!

¡Pura Vida!

Tengo 78 Años Hoy

That is how we say it in Costa Rica español,  Tengo 78 años hoy, translated “I have 78 years today” on July 4, 2018. No particular celebration today, I will wait until the big 80! 🙂 Then a big party!

Super Hamburguesa & My Kindle! Before the Pecan Pie Alamode dessert!

This morning I bought a pecan pie (possibly my favorite dessert) at my favorite bakery, Crema y Nada, and vanilla ice cream at my favorite supermercado. That will serve as my birthday cake after eating my favorite hamburger to go from Donde Bocha this afternoon. Then I will post this with photos of both treats.

And yes, it has been a great birthday! Thanks for the kind messages of feliz cumpleaños!  (happy birthday!) from people here and in the states! It was a wonderful, relaxed day! I have a friend visiting this weekend and otherwise I keep slowly building the new website as I find time. So much information to add!

BLOG MOVED TO WORDPRESS TODAY

Today was the day! With help from a professional at Codeable my blog was moved from Blogger to WordPress today as the first page of my new website using WordPress: Retired in Costa Rica, charliedoggett.net  Click link to see it all live. A Blog excerpt is on the Home Page and the whole thing as first menu item named: Blog

SUBSCRIBERS

Because of the move you who have been subscribers should have received an email from WordPress (check your Spam folder if not). It is very important that you CONFIRM YOUR SUBSCRIPTION by clicking a link in the email that takes you to a WordPress subscriptions page where you click again to confirm. Otherwise you will no longer receive the email version of my blog.

REBUILDING WEBSITE

I’m hoping to improve the blog by shortening the posts and using fewer photos to not overwhelm you. It now dovetails into my website with lots of personal static information pages, family history and cemetery data pages, and lots of stories to be added as I rebuild the site that was started in 2000 while in The Gambia, West Africa. I’m just starting the time-consuming job of rebuilding, so please be patient. Once the static pages are rebuilt and new ones added, I will consider moving my photo gallery from SmugMug to the website so that everything is in one place. But one thing at a time!  🙂

LINKS

Links to my old Blogger posts will be forwarded to the same post on WordPress. So any post you have linked to is still a good link.

Sorry to say that links to my old personal website will not! Family history researchers can still find the new pages on charliedoggett.net as before but with a new address. Email me if you need an article’s address and can’t find it. I have the only detailed information pages on the two Hardgrave family cemeteries in Nashville and the only webpage about our family war hero Earl Doggett completed, available now!

Let me know what you would like to see different in the blogs or the website.
