Banded Peacock

As I continue to see more butterflies than birds in my garden, I found this one yesterday morning after breakfast which I haven’t seen in awhile, the Banded Peacock. He is very common all over Costa Rica and I was seeing more in May and June here. I do have better photos than these in my Banded Peacock Gallery, if interested.

And if you like to read more about butterflies, here’s a Wikipedia article: Anartia fatima, Banded Peacock and/or the Butterflies & Moths.org Map shows them mostly in Central America and Mexico.

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.

  1. Your photos were very helpful in identifying a banded peacock we just observed in Tamarindo. The drawing on our CR Butterflies card is not the best. We will use your pages for IDs from now on.
    Muchas Gracias – Steve

    1. Thanks Steve! My blog has most of the Costa Rica butterflies I’ve photographed, but scattered over 6 years of posts. For ID I suggest you check out my CR Butterflies Photo Gallery with more than 124 species of butterflies identified plus some unidentified ones. Its at:

You did not say if you live in CR or traveling here. But if living here or visit often I recommend for butterfly ID the book A SWIFT GUIDE TO BUTTERFLIES OF MEXICO & CENTRAL AMERICA by Jeffrey Glassberg. It has more of the CR butterflies than any other book I’ve found yet. Available on Amazon.com.

And thanks again for the compliment! Use my “CONTACT” form to contact me and I will then share my email address with you. My web host says not to post it here. 🙂

  2. We have had a place in Tamarindo for 15 years. We enjoy identifying flora and fauna. We have a big butterfly garden back at our home in Maryland. We spent a few nights in Atenas a few years back – nice little town. Maybe we’ll run into each other sometime. Cheers – Steve
