 A Short "Photographer's Biography" Minimize

Below is what Marsha Rusk of SAS/Sassy Art Shows wrote about me before one show:

Charlie was born in famous for the "Bradley Tomato" Bradley County, Arkansas in 1940, the same birth-year of Bugs Bunny and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! He grew up in El Dorado, Arkansas where he loved art in school, starting with water colors and really getting excited when by Junior High he got a Grumbacher oil painting kit. He loved painting nature and tried to imitate his grand uncle Harlan Hunt who was a well-known landscape artist in the Ozarks of North Arkansas. He also grew closer to the outdoors as an avid Boy Scout who prefered hiking and camping trips over everything else.

He graduated from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated from Ouachita Baptist University back in Arkansas with a BA in Sociology. Because social work seemed like too much paperwork, he went on to graduate from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas in 1965 with a Master of Religious Education. He was a youth minister in Texas and Florida churches before working the rest of his life in various denominational roles for the Southern Baptist Convention.

After being downsized out of LifeWay Christian Resources with early retirement at age 59, he served for three years as a missionary in The Gambia West Africa through 2002 when Social Security kicked in! It was during those years in Africa that nature photography became a consuming hobby.

Charlie states, "It is all about having an eye for a photo - it is in the eye more than in the camera! I want my work to instill a love of nature in folks and encourage them to get outdoors and help preserve our environment."

Charlie is former president of the Nashville Photography Club and a volunteer photographer and docent at the Nashville Zoo where you can see his work on exhibit signs, brochures, maps,  and newsletters. One of his photos represents the zoo on the cover of the 2008 Greater Nashville White Pages AT&Tdirectory. He is an active member of First Baptist Nashville and still loves to go on mission trips. An avid outdoorsman, he still goes hiking regularly and on an occasional camping trip.

 Vision Statement Minimize

Since childhood I've seen nature as the art of God. I love being outdoors and trying to capture it in the camera. Rather than being a technical photographer who depends on many gadgets and skills, I see good photography as more about the eye and the soul. I hope my images bring new appreciation of nature and God to those who see them.

DIGITAL CAMERAS

Currently I use a Canon Rebel xti SLR Digital camera for most of my work. It replaced my earlier Canon 10D which was my first SLR Digital camera. I love both of them and have become brand-loyal to Canon. I also have a little pocket camera that I try to carry with me most of the time. It is a Canon PowerShot SD550 which at 7.1 megapixels and fast shutter speed takes great photos of everything in-between the macros and zooming in on bird or wild animal.

PRE-DIGITAL

In the 1990's I got a Canon Rebel G film camera which was what I used during my three years in The Gambia. And I guess that was when I became sold on Canon. It was easy to use and made quality photos. I did better when shooting slides over print film, but in Gambia only print film could be processed and mailorder was undependable there. Thus I shot print film and don't have good digital copies of them for much practical use now. Most of my Gambia prints I make today are from poor scans of either the negative or a print on my HP Scanner. I wish I could afford to pay someone to make high-quality scans of thoses thousands of Gambia negatives! Oh well . . .

PRINTING

I print all of my images up to 13x19 on an Epson Stylus PHOTO R2400. It replace my earlier 2200 printer, both of which do superb jobs of printing with 100+ years color-fastness guaranteed says Epson. I have been quite pleased and only use commercial printers for larger than 13x19 prints. For that I prefer Chromatics Nashville. I have also used Dury's Nashville which is also a good printer. Because canvas prints are so expensive at Chromatics, I have tried one mail-order company for one canvas print and was quite pleased.

MATTING/PACKAGING

I get my pre-cut mats and clear packaging bags from clearbags.com. My Greeting card foundations come from PhotographersEdge.com. I ship and transport all images including framed, canvas or Gatorboard in bubble bags which I get from Uline.com. I prefer to ship by UPS or FedEx when I have a choice.
