This is without a doubt my favorite waterfall in all of Tennessee and thus I think the most beautiful. It is a full-day hike of 9 miles round trip. Note that it is down hill going in and thus up hill coming out!
This waterfall comes out of a cave at the top and falls into a sink hole at the bottom, the only one I know like it! It was featured in the Disney live-action movie Jungle Book along with other Tennessee waterfalls.
I usually have the group meet at a Cracker Barrel in Mt. Juliet or Cookeville for a 6:00 breakfast and try to get on the trail around 8:00 AM. That gives us plenty of time to get out before dark.
It is about 1.5 hour drive from Nashville. We take I-40 east to Cookeville and 111 south to Sparta, then east on U.S. 70 to the turnoff for the falls.
Bring plenty of water, a sack lunch, and wear good sturdy hiking shoes/boots. Of course your camera is a must! We will see two other waterfalls on the way to Virgin Falls. My second favorite falls on this trip is one falling over a cave, Big Laurel Falls.
In the Spring we will also see lots of wildflowers. Spring is the best time because you always have plenty of water coming over the falls. A dry or drought-summer could leave little more than a trickle coming over the falls.
