This is a beautiful place to hike with many overlooks over Savage or the Big Creek leg of the gulf. It is one mile to the Stone Door and 3 more miles on the rim trail to Alum Gap, all level ground. The full hike is 4 miles one-way or 8-miles round trip. One alternative is to either go or return on the Big Creek Gulf Trail making the round trip about 10 miles and a lot more difficult as you will climb over boulders and have to climb up out of the gulf. But you will get to see Ranger Falls. Thus you see how this could easily be made into a backpacking trip with the campsite at Alum Gap in a beautiful pine forest. I love it.
But for day hikes my groups stay on the rim trail and some choose to not go all the way to Alum Gap, thus making it much less than the possible 8 miles round trip. Yet you get to see several great overlooks and of course the great Stone Door!
My favorite time to go is in the fall, at least in those years when the color is good. (Never a guarantee on fall color!)
It is 1.5 to 2 hours drive from Nashville to the trailhead on the edge of Beersheba Springs, Tennessee and the time hiking is up to you! I usually drive the group to Greeter Falls after the hike where you can see 2 or 3 beautiful falls in less than a 1 mile walk. Impressive! We can discuss all the options.
